What's the Story, Morning Glory?

[This is a report, written Tuesday, on my recent trip on Morning Glory seeds, written to post to erowid.org. Morning Glory seeds contain various LSA alkaloids, which are chemically very close to LSD.]

I spent $27 on 14 packets of Heavenly Blues, ground them in a coffee grinder and drank the powder. Yes, I wanted to trip hard, and I did. This was Sunday evening. I'll divide this review into two parts.

First, the bad:

Jesus Christ this stuff is toxic. I got a pain mainly in my legs that lasted many, many, many hours. All parts of me went back and forth from feeling numb to being in great pain. It's been 48 hours and I still have trouble walking, like my nerves are damaged or something.

I drank all the seed powder at 4:30pm. I watched the World Series game two which ended probably around 6:30-7:00. The pain came quickly. Around midnight I was unable to take it any more and went to bed (which was quite impossible for hours - my brain was wacked out). I normally take a prescribed sedative every night and decided to take two. When I got up to let my cat out of my room around noon, I discovered that I had lost control of my nervous system (I think - I'm no doctor). I had trouble getting to the door, and when I did I had trouble opening it. I ended up lying against the wall, while very carefully moving my hand and arm to open the door; cat ran out; I stumbled back to bed. I made myself get up at 5:30pm Monday for a test. I got up, threw up, got a ride, took the test, wanted to throw up, left class early and walked home. I'm surprised I was able to walk. I'm sure I looked like a drunk who was about to pass out trying to look normal.

I got back in bed somewhere around 7:30-8:00pm and continued sleeping until about 1:00pm on Tuesday. That's about 36 hours in bed, if you ignore the two hours I was up for school, and I only got up on Tuesday by force of will. I still moved like I drank so much I was about to die of alcohol poisoning, now hungover. Every muscle on my body was shaking. I was mentally and physically very sedated. All this sedation was undoubtedly aided by the extra sleeping medicine, but this was still very extreme even considering that.

I went and got some espresso, which helped wake up my mind a bit and probably made me even more jittery. I thought about eating but couldn't think of anything that sounded good. I tried to play a strategy game I just got but was too sedated to learn it. I'm finally feeling a bit better, though my thinking is still foggy.

But let me make it clear: the worst part was that first night, while I was tripping. The pain was unbearable. Every time I tried to move a pain shot through my legs and groin. Knowing how bad it is, I wouldn't advise taking this stuff straight even if you can handle a smaller dose. It can't be good for you. Find some way to extract the LSA. But again, I'm no doctor.

And now, the good:

Oh, the good! Everything was swirling, swirling, swirling. The grains on the wood in my kitchen were dancing and growing and moving back and forth. Everything waved as though liquid, or blowing in the wind. Every pattern had infinite detail; the closer I looked, the more detailed it became. I saw tiny numbers in the patterns on the tiles on my bathroom floor. As I looked closer, they turned into complex-looking mathematic formulae. As the effects grew stronger, the game went from watching for hallucinations to trying to stop the hallucinations and see things as they actually were.

The best part was how it effected my enjoyment of music. I decided that listening to my new Doors album would be appropriate, and it turned out to be a very good choice. I became fascinated with the jazz keyboarding of... whoever the keyboardist is. It truly is impressive and very sophisticated. You should give it a closer listen even if you're sober.

I got hungry and decided to heat up a TV dinner, which took maybe 45 minutes since I couldn't keep track of what I was doing; my brain was fascinated with anything and everything. I finally finished cooking my food, and decided to try to relax and eat it while watching an episode of the Simpsons on my computer, all of which I'd already seen a million times before. I think I spent around an hour and a half or even two hours watching that 23-minute video because I kept pausing and going back to watch the same part over and over. I kept discovering new jokes and what the writers must have been thinking at this point or that and all sorts of similar things.

The visuals were enough to astound anyone, but the highlight was my new appreciation for the detail in things. I had this sense that I had discovered something great, that I could do great things with this drug. The phrase "open your mind" went from a being silly phrase by kids forty years ago who thought taking drugs could change the world (which is of course mainly all it is) to profoundly resonating with me. I felt awake.

War took toll on decorated Marine accused of opening fire on noisy crowd

LAWRENCE, Mass. --A decorated Marine accused of firing a shotgun at a crowd of club-goers pleaded innocent Monday to attempted murder and other charges and was ordered to be evaluated at a state psychiatric hospital.

Sgt. Daniel Cotnoir, 33, of Lawrence, was named "Marine of the Year" last month for his service in Iraq. A mortician by trade, he prepared the bodies of dead U.S. soldiers for burial. After returning from 10 months in Iraq in November, Cotnoir said the job took a heavy psychological toll.

Early Saturday morning, police said, he pointed a 12-gauge shotgun out the window of his second-floor apartment and fired a single shot at a noisy crowd leaving nearby nightclubs. Lissette Cumba, 15, and Kelvin Castro, 20, were both struck in the leg by fragments. They were treated at local hospitals and released.

Cotnoir, a married father of two daughters, told police he feared for the safety of his family after someone threw an empty juice bottle through his bedroom window.

"It was never this man's intention, as he tells me, to hurt anyone," said his lawyer, Robert Kelley. "It was only his intention to fire a warning shot when he was placed in a threatening situation."

Prosecutor Poppi Hagan told the judge that some of the club-goers had seen Cotnoir standing with his gun in the window of his apartment over his family's funeral home, but thought the weapon was fake.

Cumba's cousin, Stephanie Tejeda, who was in the crowd that night, described seeing the muzzle poking through the open window.

"I just thought he wanted to scare us to get away from the area," said Tejeda, who attended Cotnoir's arraignment Monday in Lawrence District Court. "Who shoots at an open crowd?"

Tejeda said she does not want to see Cotnoir go to prison.

"I just think he should get help. That's how I see it," she said.

But Cumba's uncle, James Rodriquez, was visibly angry after Cotnoir's arraignment.

"She's been crying all night," he said of his niece. "If this man is sick, why was he holding weapons in his house?"

James Stokes, a retired minister who went to school with Cotnoir's father, said he does not believe Daniel Cotnoir was trying to kill anyone.

"This man is a wonderful person," he said. "Something might have happened when he came back from Iraq. ... He's out there picking up body parts," he said.

Cotnoir and his father, Daniel Cotnoir, operate the Racicot Funeral Home in Lawrence, about 30 miles north of Boston.

In Iraq, Cotnoir prepared the battered bodies of his fellow Marines for open-casket funerals. In an interview with The Boston Globe last year, he described retrieving charred and decimated remains.

"What you see out there, it's a real smash to reality," Cotnoir said.

Cotnoir is charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and one count of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

After Cotnoir met with a court-appointed psychologist, Judge Thomas Brennan ordered him evaluated at the state hospital in Bridgewater.

Psychologist Alexandra Weida said Cotnoir supplied a "reasonable account" of the night of the shooting, but she said, "I question whether he was completely reality-based when he made his decisions."

The judge scheduled another hearing for Sept. 2.

Last month, Marine Corps Times chose Cotnoir over 180,000 other candidates for its annual Marine of the Year award.

Now a Marine reservist, Cotnoir said in an interview last month with the Eagle-Tribune newspaper that he was getting counseling at a veterans hospital in Bedford.

"It's a lot harder to talk about the job now than it was at the time to actually do it," he said. "The stories I've gained from my deployment aren't the kind of stories you share."

Also on Monday, another Iraq war veteran appeared in court in Las Vegas to face charges of using an assault rifle to kill a woman and wound a man in an alley.

An attorney for Matthew Sepi, 20, said he acted in self-defense and should be eligible for psychological treatment. Sepi, an American Indian from Winslow, Ariz., moved to Las Vegas after being honorably discharged as an Army specialist in May. Sepi told police he pulled an assault rifle from beneath his coat and reacted when he was ambushed in an alley.

So, a business card was slipped under my front door. It's from some Secret Service agent named Mason F. Bayman. It has a note written on it to call his office number, and it's a real number. I called, but he's not in, it seems.

"By law, the Secret Service is authorized to protect the President, Vice President, President-elect, Vice President-elect, and their immediate family members; former Presidents and their spouses; minor children of a former President until the age of 16; major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, and within 120 days of the general election, their spouses; visiting foreign heads of government or heads of state; and others if authorized by the President. An individual who receives Secret Service protection is referred to as a "protectee." In 1997, Congressional legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former Presidents for a period of not more than 10 years from the date the President leaves office. So..... WTF? I checked the president's schedule and hes in Hollywood today and tomorrow. Still, WTF? Is the government rounding up the commies?

when i got up today, i looked at the clock and thought "jesus! i only slept a few hours! ........... wait a minute... isnt this the time i went to bed?".
